Volunteer: Patient Navigator VolunteerWant to help newly arrived refugees navigate the healthcare system?
Patient Navigator Volunteer’s (PNV's) perform a vital role at USCRI-Albany by transporting refugee families to important medical and other appointments. In general, most PNV's sign-up for one or two trips per week, or every other week. All PNV trips are done weekdays during business hours, with many involving taking refugees to Refugee Health Assessment (RHA) appointments. The RHA process is a very comprehensive medical screening conducted within the first 90 days of a refugee's arrival. It is done at either St. Peter's or Whitney Young, and involves three separate appointments. Other PNV trips involve taking clients who have on-going medical issues to their appointments. These are generally scheduled through Medical Coordination Program coordinator or our "Services to Older Refugees Program". Finally, our clients also have miscellaneous appointments that require transportation: These can involve taking newly-arrived refugees to the Social Security Administration office in Albany, taking parents & their children to WIC program appointments at Whitney Young, etc. We look forward to you joining our volunteer team! Volunteer: Program Support VolunteersPROGRAM SUPPORT VOLUNTEER
USCRI Albany seeks passionate, organized, dedicated individuals to serve as student volunteers in our office year-round. Diverse positions are available assisting with refugee services, immigration legal services, accounting, and development/management functions. Volunteers must commit to a minimum of 12 weeks, 12-20 hours a week during the academic year, 25-40 hours a week in the summer.
Volunteering with USCRI Albany is rewarding and challenging. USCRI Albany volunteers work hard and contribute to our agency in significant ways, and build skills that they take with them to support success in a variety of career paths. Successful past volunteers have worked with USCRI during their undergraduate and graduate study. USCRI Albany volunteers have gone on to graduate and post-graduate programs; service in the Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, and similar programs; and professional work in the nonprofit, government, and business sectors.

• Develop a rich understanding of refugees and refugee resettlement.
• Experience immersion in the daily operations in the field office of a national non-profit organization with a century of experience serving immigrants and refugees across the United States and internationally.
• Work with staff, clients, and peers from around the world.

• Representing USCRI to the broader community. All volunteers will interact with the broader community, including other volunteers, landlords, employers, and partner agencies. Everyone is expected to clearly communicate the mission and services of USCRI Albany and to address community members’ questions with patience and respect.

Volunteer: Tutor/MentorWhat is Wizard's Wardrobe?
The Wizard’s Wardrobe is a free one-on-one, after-school tutoring program for elementary students in the South End of Albany. Our focus is on reading and writing skills, along with problem solving, which is nurtured with our monthly STEM challenges. These challenges help build perseverance and grit and encourage risk-taking. Our trained volunteer tutors welcome the children into a safe space, with an imaginative theme. Our library has over 2,700 books in order for tutors to help students find ones of interest on their reading level, as well as books that tutors can read to them to increase their listening vocabularies. Once accepted into the program, students are welcome to continue through elementary school. We work to complement and enhance their experiences in school to raise their academic standings. Project Description:This is an excellent opportunity for someone who loves children, has a can-do attitude and is ready to strengthen a young student’s possibilities. As one tutor said of her student, “my job is to help her believe in herself and what she can accomplish.” Tutors must complete a two-day training before being assigned a student. Our last training for the 2024-25 school year will be Jan. 11 & 18, 2025. We ask tutors to make a commitment for a full school year. Building a relationship with the student is of primary importance. It is this relationship that research tells us allows the student to make great progress. Many of our tutors have worked with their students for several years. Currently we have a waiting list of students. We need tutors in order to enroll students. Your volunteering with us is essential. Students come twice a week for one and a half hours each time. Tutors commit to one or two afternoons a week. If twice, the student will have only that one tutor. If once, the tutor will share the student with another tutor. Tutors participate in a 15-hour training course. Our children come at various times, depending on which school they attend. The program is open from 1:00 - 5:30 PM, Monday-Thursday with 2 tutoring slots (2:45-4:15; 3:45-5:15). It is also open on Friday, 2:00-5:30. Volunteer: Seeking Website and Digital Content DesignerMt. Ida Food Pantry is committed to providing help for their neighbors in the Rensselaer County area! Project Description: We are looking for the creation of a website for the Food Pantry so that we can get the word out to those looking to donate pantry items , but also for those who are in need of the pantries services. We also would like to create a link so guests of the pantry could "shop online" for their groceries and then come in to pick them up instead of waiting in our very long lines. We would also like to use this link to promote on our Facebook about the online shopping feature. We are seeking someone who knows how to create website, links, and content that is user-friendly, visually appealing, and makes life more convenient for our guests. Agency: Mt. Volunteer: Call Center & Data Center Help - Moving Schenectady Forward CoalitionOur coalition that has responded so effectively to the needs of the community during the pandemic is in process of transition over the next month. By the end of June we hope to have ended our centralized food and supply distribution out of the Boys & Girls Club, and shifted resources to community-based food access to absorb what we anticipate to be a summer of high need.
Along the way, we have been fortunate to have had resources such as the National Guard and County employees to help with our Call Center, Data Center and Distribution. As those folks are being redeployed elsewhere, we are now in need of more volunteers over the next four weeks to ensure that we remain responsive to people seeking help.
If you have volunteers that can help us -- people in your network, board members, etc. -- please refer them to my associate Jean Churchill, who will be assuming responsibility for volunteer coordination. Jean's email is: jmchurchill@schenectadyfoundation.org.
We primarily need people to assist at our Call Center, and with Data Entry. We may also need Packers in the afternoon to prepare food and supply bags for delivery the next day. We have both morning and afternoon shifts of about 3 hours.
We operate out of the new Boys & Girls Club, which is a spacious, bright, clean and safe location with plentiful parking. Volunteers are physically distanced, wear masks, and are supplied with hand sanitizer.

Volunteer: A collection or a drive for Trinity Alliance of the Capital RegionConsider coordinating a collection or a drive for us. We are committed to continue providing services within and to our communities. We have remained open for all crisis and basic need services and programs, while reducing group activities and programming to protect the community we serve and our workforce. We have continued to reach out to the families and individuals who are served by our multiple clinical, counseling, and case management programs. Our two Emergency Food Pantries are designated by the NY State Department of Health Hunger Prevention Nutrition Assistance Program in Arbor Hill and the South End. As such, we are obligated to meet the needs of all who seek assistance, even those outside our catchment area. We are the only five day a week full day food pantries in Albany. We are receiving about double (sometimes triple) the volume of patrons with the advent of COVID-19. In addition, we are also home delivering foodstuffs for the first time in our history. We can work directly with volunteers to do a collection for us based on our current needs. Examples could be diapers, baby formula, personal hygiene supplies, cleaning supplies, toiletry items, Walmart gift cards, etc. It could be as simple as asking friends and neighbors to leave items on your front porch, and then a volunteer can deliver the items they collect. Upon completion, you can drop off the boxes to 15 Trinity Place, Albany, NY 12202 c/o Development Office. Call 518-449-5155 x 134 to arrange for a contact free pick up or you may email supporttrinity@ta-cr.org to inform the agency that the items will be mailed. Community Studios is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit dedicated to providing a space where the benefits of art-making impact both the individual and the community as a whole. We offer low-cost art workshops and groups, community wellness activities, and open studios to promote art-making and the creative process as a vehicle for personal growth, communication, and social change. We believe that the beneficial experience of art-making should be affordable and accessible to everyone. Our goal is to use expressive arts as an equalizer across cultural and economic barriers, and for participants to learn how to use art as an expressive medium to increase their general well-being. We focus on the process of the art-making, not the product. Unlike other art studios, our expectations are not rooted in a product or an image. We focus on the evolution of a piece and encourage conversation about its meaning."
