Volunteer: Patient Navigator Volunteer

Want to help newly arrived refugees navigate the healthcare system?

Patient Navigator Volunteer’s (PNV's) perform a vital role at USCRI-Albany by transporting refugee families to important medical and other appointments.

In general, most PNV's sign-up for one or two trips per week, or every other week. All PNV trips are done weekdays during business hours, with many involving taking refugees to Refugee Health Assessment (RHA) appointments. The RHA process is a very comprehensive medical screening conducted within the first 90 days of a refugee's arrival.  It is done at either St. Peter's or Whitney Young, and involves three separate appointments.

Other PNV trips involve taking clients who have on-going medical issues to their appointments.  These are generally scheduled through Medical Coordination Program coordinator or our "Services to Older Refugees Program".

Finally, our clients also have miscellaneous appointments that require transportation:  These can involve taking newly-arrived refugees to the Social Security Administration office in Albany, taking parents & their children to WIC program appointments at Whitney Young, etc.

We look forward to you joining our volunteer team!

Volunteer: Refugee Youth Mentors

Program Description

Making A Connection (MAC) is a new mentorship program of USCRI Albany aimed at matching vulnerable refugee youth ages 15-24 with positive adult volunteer mentors.

Volunteer mentors will help mentees identify and work towards at least one social and educational or vocational goal. Mentors and mentees will meet at least twice a month: once as a group for a 2-hour session at the USCRI Albany office, and once individually for a 2-hour session at a public location convenient to the mentor and mentee. In addition, the MAC Program Coordinator will organize 3-4 field trips a year to engage youth in positive social activities and expose them to new experiences and opportunities.

Mentees

In its first year, The MAC program will serve 25 refugee youth ages 15-24. Eligible participants are those who have been in the U.S. for five years or less, with priority given to those who have been here less than one year. Mentees come from Burma, Afghanistan, The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eritrea, Iraq, Nepal, Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, and other countries.

Mentors

Mentors must commit to one year of volunteering. Weekly hours will vary, though mentors can expect to spend 4-6 hours per month with their mentee. While everyone who is interested in becoming a mentor is encouraged to apply, favored candidates will be people who are immigrants themselves, are willing to learn about other cultures, speak the same language(s) as potential mentees, have prior experience or interest in refugee populations, and are empathetic.

Volunteer: Program Support Volunteers

PROGRAM SUPPORT VOLUNTEER   USCRI Albany seeks passionate, organized, dedicated individuals to serve as student volunteers in our office year-round. Diverse positions are available assisting with refugee services, immigration legal services, accounting, and development/management functions. Volunteers must commit to a minimum of 12 weeks, 12-20 hours a week during the academic year, 25-40 hours a week in the summer.   Volunteering with USCRI Albany is rewarding and challenging. USCRI Albany volunteers work hard and contribute to our agency in significant ways, and build skills that they take with them to support success in a variety of career paths. Successful past volunteers have worked with USCRI during their undergraduate and graduate study. USCRI Albany volunteers have gone on to graduate and post-graduate programs; service in the Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, and similar programs; and professional work in the nonprofit, government, and business sectors.    Volunteers have access to a range of benefits during their time at USCRI Albany, including on-the-job learning opportunities and professional development resources. USCRI Albany volunteers can expect to do the following:   •      Develop a rich understanding of refugees and refugee resettlement. •      Experience immersion in the daily operations in the field office of a national non-profit organization with a century of experience serving immigrants and refugees across the United States and internationally. •      Work with staff, clients, and peers from around the world. •         ABOUT OUR VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES •      All volunteer positions are unpaid. Applicants are responsible for all costs of living. •      Student volunteers must commit to a minimum of 12 weeks, 12-20 hours a week during the academic year, 25-40 hours a week in the summer. Preference is given to applicants who can make a commitment beyond the minimum. •      Volunteers must complete hours within the business week, Mon-Fri 9:00-5:00. Each volunteer position at USCRI Albany is a unique experience and has a balance of tasks. At the same time, there are common experiences that volunteers can expect. • Direct Client Interaction. Refugee clients are in our office every day, and all volunteers will have the opportunity to practice cross-cultural communication skills through client interaction. Most volunteers will have a weekly shift at our Front Desk, welcoming and assisting clients.  While it is wonderful that many of our volunteer applicants want experience working with refugee populations, it is important to note that volunteer positions with USCRI Albany are not an opportunity to get to know refugees on a personal level. Volunteers assist with the delivery of services to refugees as clients of USCRI, maintaining professional boundaries at all times. • Administrative Work. All volunteers and all staff collaborate in the necessary tasks of documenting the services we provide to clients. No position is solely administrative, but all volunteers contribute to tasks including filing, copying, faxing, and data entry. USCRI Albany seeks volunteers who understand the importance of accurate records and are willing to give their full attention to necessary administrative tasks. • Housing Support. A major task of refugee resettlement organizations is preparing apartments for new arrivals, including moving in furniture, kitchen and bathroom items, and an initial supply of food staples. Some positions focus more on housing support; during busy weeks, all volunteers with the physical ability to do so are asked to assist with housing preparation. • Representing USCRI to the broader community. All volunteers will interact with the broader community, including other volunteers, landlords, employers, and partner agencies. Everyone is expected to clearly communicate the mission and services of USCRI Albany and to address community members’ questions with patience and respect. • Managing time and meeting deadlines. All volunteers are expected to come prepared to keep track of and meet multiple deadlines, from urgent tasks to multi-week projects.     AVAILABLE VOLUNTEER POSITIONS:   Refugee Services USCRI Albany assists recently-arrived refugees with housing; cultural adjustment; accessing healthcare, education, and social services; employment preparation and placement; and building self-sufficiency. Interns work closely with staff, gaining experience with service coordination, case file management, and cross-cultural interactions. Approximately 6-8 volunteer positions are available in the area of Refugee Services. Applicants should indicate general interest in this area, and may be asked for any preference regarding a specific focus, which may include employment, housing, health, or other issue areas.   Immigration Legal Services USCRI Albany’s Immigration Legal Services team includes a Staff Attorney and a Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) Accredited Representative who provide legal advice and representation to refugees and immigrants who wish to obtain green cards and/or travel documents, or to apply to bring family members to the US. Immigration Legal Services Volunteers may assist staff with tasks such as filing, research, and arranging and taking notes in consultations. One position available, must have impeccable attention to detail. Legal background preferred but not required.   Accounting Assist staff with accounting tasks related to refugee services, focus on tracking expenditures in digital and hard copy file systems. What is Wizard's Wardrobe?

The Wizard’s Wardrobe is a free one-on-one, after-school tutoring program for  elementary students in the South End of Albany. Our focus is on reading and writing skills, along with problem solving, which is nurtured with our monthly STEM challenges. These challenges help build perseverance and grit and encourage risk-taking.

Our trained volunteer tutors welcome the children into a safe space, with an imaginative theme. Our library has over 2,700 books in order for tutors to help students find ones of interest on their reading level, as well as books that tutors can read to them to increase their listening vocabularies.

Once accepted into the program, students are welcome to continue through elementary school. We work to complement and enhance their experiences in school to raise their academic standings.

 Project Description:

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who loves children, has a can-do attitude and is ready to strengthen a young student’s possibilities.

As one tutor said of her student, “my job is to help her believe in herself and what she can accomplish.”

Tutors must complete a two-day training before being assigned a student. Our last training for the 2024-25 school year will be Jan. 11 & 18, 2025.

We ask tutors to make a commitment for a full school year. Building a relationship with the student is of primary importance. It is this relationship that research tells us allows the student to make great progress. Many of our tutors have worked with their students for several years.

Currently we have a waiting list of students. We need tutors in order to enroll students. Your volunteering with us is essential. Students come twice a week for one and a half hours each time. Tutors commit to one or two afternoons a week. If twice, the student will have only that one tutor.  If once, the tutor will share the student with another tutor. Tutors participate in a 15-hour training course.

Our children come at various times, depending on which school they attend. The program is open from 1:00 - 5:30 PM, Monday-Thursday with 2 tutoring slots (2:45-4:15; 3:45-5:15). It is also open on Friday, 2:00-5:30.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FOR VOLUNTEERS

The Albany Damien Center is taking the following steps to foster the health and wellness of our members, tenants, visitors and staff:

We have restricted access to our building to the rear entrance only and are screening anyone entering the building, including taking temperatures, before they are allowed inside. We have protocols in place for assisting anyone who has an indication they may be ill, including a “safe zone” for them to wait for assistance away from others and outside of the building. We are greatly reducing the traffic in the building by: Accepting deliveries outside of the building whenever possible Encouraging members to pick up their meals outside using our new “Grab ‘N Go” meal services rather than sit-down inside. Any items that need to be picked up by members, such as paperwork, food cards or pet food, are given to the member outside of the building Any members who are ill will have their meals delivered and set outside of their residence to allow for proper distancing. Non-essential staff will be working remotely if they are not already We are cleaning and disinfecting all spaces at least once per day and common spaces more often. We are encouraging handwashing and other NYSDOH and CDC best practices for preventing the spread of the COVID-19 virus. We have several washrooms throughout the building for handwashing and hand sanitizer is available. We are not using masks as this has not been recommended. We are practicing social distancing and have arranged our sit-down living room/dining room to allow for this.

Volunteer: Seeking Website and Digital Content Designer

Mt. Ida Food Pantry is committed to providing help for their neighbors in the Rensselaer County area!

Project Description:

We are looking for the creation of a website for the Food Pantry so that we can get the word out to those looking to donate pantry items , but also for those who are in need of the pantries services.

We also would like to create a link so guests of the pantry could "shop online" for their groceries and then come in to pick them up instead of waiting in our very long lines. We would also like to use this link to promote on our Facebook about the online shopping feature.

We are seeking someone who knows how to create website, links, and content that is user-friendly, visually appealing, and makes life more convenient for our guests.

Volunteer: Call Center & Data Center Help - Moving Schenectady Forward Coalition

Our coalition that has responded so effectively to the needs of the community during the pandemic is in process of transition over the next month.  By the end of June we hope to have ended our centralized food and supply distribution out of the Boys & Girls Club, and shifted resources to community-based food access to absorb what we anticipate to be a summer of high need.   Along the way, we have been fortunate to have had resources such as the National Guard and County employees to help with our Call Center, Data Center and Distribution.  As those folks are being redeployed elsewhere, we are now in need of more volunteers over the next four weeks to ensure that we remain responsive to people seeking help.   If you have volunteers that can help us -- people in your network, board members, etc. -- please refer them to my associate Jean Churchill, who will be assuming responsibility for volunteer coordination.  Jean's email is:  jmchurchill@schenectadyfoundation.org.   We primarily need people to assist at our Call Center, and with Data Entry.  We may also need Packers in the afternoon to prepare food and supply bags for delivery the next day.  We have both morning and afternoon shifts of about 3 hours.   We operate out of the new Boys & Girls Club, which is a spacious, bright, clean and safe location with plentiful parking.  Volunteers are physically distanced, wear masks, and are supplied with hand sanitizer.

Volunteer: Packing and Misc Volunteers - Moving Schenectady Forward Coalition

Volunteers are needed between Noon and 3 pm to pack supply bags to be distributed the following day. There is no heavy lifting involved. A supervisor will instruct volunteers as to the contents that should be in each bag. Typically, we pack one set of bags with perishable items (meats, produce) and a second set of bags with non-perishables. Perishables are kept in a refrigerated truck over-night. We anticipate packing 600 – 800 bags per day.

and other volunteers are needed:

Volunteers that have certification to operate a forklift are needed periodically, to assist in transferring product that is delivered from the Regional Food Bank to our on-site storage trucks.

We are operating out of the new Boys & Girls Club located on Education Drive in Mont Pleasant, adjacent to Mont Pleasant Middle School and Pleasant Valley Elementary. Parking is plentiful. The facility is large, enabling us to ensure that volunteer work spaces are physically distant, and operated with the safety of volunteers and staff as our priority. All volunteers are asked to wear masks, which can be provided upon request. We also have hand sanitizer, gloves and other protective measures in place to ensure safety.

Volunteer: A collection or a drive for Trinity Alliance of the Capital Region

Consider coordinating a collection or a drive for us.

We are committed to continue providing services within and to our communities.   We have remained open for all crisis and basic need services and programs, while reducing group activities and programming to protect the community we serve and our workforce.  We have continued to reach out to the families and individuals who are served by our multiple clinical, counseling, and case management programs.

Our two Emergency Food Pantries are designated by the NY State Department of Health Hunger Prevention Nutrition Assistance Program in Arbor Hill and  the South End.  As such, we are obligated to meet the needs of all who seek assistance, even those outside our catchment area.  We are the only five day a week full day food pantries in Albany.  We are receiving about double (sometimes triple) the volume of patrons with the advent of COVID-19.  In addition, we are also home delivering foodstuffs for the first time in our history.

We can work directly with volunteers to do a collection for us based on our current needs.

Examples could be diapers, baby formula, personal hygiene supplies, cleaning supplies, toiletry items, Walmart gift cards, etc.  It could be as simple as asking friends and neighbors to leave items on your front porch, and then a volunteer can deliver the items they collect.

Upon completion, you can drop off the boxes to 15 Trinity Place, Albany, NY 12202  c/o Development Office.  Call 518-449-5155 x 134  to arrange for a contact free pick up or you may email supporttrinity@ta-cr.org to inform the agency that the items will be mailed.

Make sure to please reach out to supporttrinity@ta-cr.org  before starting your drive to coordinate all logistics.

WHAT IS THE MISSION OF C.R.E.A.T.E COMMUNITY STUDIOS?

"C.R.E.A.T.E. Community Studios is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit dedicated to providing a space where the benefits of art-making impact both the individual and the community as a whole. We offer low-cost art workshops and groups, community wellness activities, and open studios to promote art-making and the creative process as a vehicle for personal growth, communication, and social change. We believe that the beneficial experience of art-making should be affordable and accessible to everyone. Our goal is to use expressive arts as an equalizer across cultural and economic barriers, and for participants to learn how to use art as an expressive medium to increase their general well-being. We focus on the process of the art-making, not the product. Unlike other art studios, our expectations are not rooted in a product or an image. We focus on the evolution of a piece and encourage conversation about its meaning."

Our library has over 2,500 books in order for tutors to help students find ones of interest on their reading level, as well as books that tutors can read to them to increase their listening vocabularies.

Once accepted into the program, students are welcome to continue through elementary school. We work to complement and enhance their experiences in school to raise their academic standings.

Project Description:

Wizard's Wardrobe is seeking a talented individual who would be interested in keeping our social media up to date - website, Facebook Page and other social media. Let your creativity flow and help us with our marketing.

Volunteer: Outreach Van Services to homeless in Albany , NY

Provide direct service to people living outside: handing out water, food, blankets, and personal supplies, accompanied by Joseph's House staff who drive the vehicle, and address the long-term housing needs of the people served.

This opportunity is for one volunteer per 4 hours shift to support our staff as they travel in and around Albany, NY.

The van leaves the above address and runs from 12-4pm and 4-8pm, 7 days a week, year-round.

Shifts are chosen on an online calendar: you do not need to have the same availability week-to-week. You can choose how often you volunteer but suggest volunteer help at 2-4 shifts each month.

Because we have limited numbers of shifts we are accepting only people who anticipate doing this on a long-term basis out of a concern for homelessness. Unfortunately this means we are not currently accepting students doing service as part of their course or those who have mandated hours.

We will start with a phone interview so we check this is the right opportunity for you, followed by a short online application form. We will require and contact two references who can attest at your ability to be non-judgmental and confidential- and willing to engage in a friendly manner with our clients. There is an information/ orientation meeting to familiarize you with general Joseph's House policies and safety issues. At that point you will be an accepted agency volunteer. However, to be a volunteer on the van, applicants will meet with outreach staff to further describe this opportunity. Helping people staying outside can be an emotional and difficult - but extremely rewarding- task: staff will help you check this is a good opportunity for you and you can provide the support the team needs.

You can access the volunteer application from our website.
