The Special Olympics Unified Sports program creates opportunities for athletes with and without intellectual disabilities to play on the same team, fostering inclusion, teamwork, and mutual respect. However, the success of these events depends not only on participation, but also on the presence of a supportive and engaged community. Many athletes with intellectual disabilities experience social isolation and are often overlooked in traditional campus spaces, making visible encouragement and recognition especially meaningful.
Volunteers will be attending and cheering on students to help create an environment where all athletes feel valued, celebrated, and included. Without an active and supportive audience, these events lose a key element that makes them empowering and impactful.
