| Volunteer: Serving the evening meal at a Homeless Shelter for men, women and families: Troy, NYJoseph's House & Shelter provides temporary shelter for homeless women, men and families in Troy NY as well as supported living accommodation, in Albany, and Troy, NY, for formerly homeless adults. Our long-term tenants have disabling conditions, which have prevented them living in the wider community. Your presence can help reassure those we serve that they are remembered by the community, and cared for by society at a time of great need. Volunteers help our staff serve the prepared dinner for our guests and tenants, and provide a friendly face and kindness. This opportunity requires you to be available from 4:40pm to 6:15pm any day of the week. Our buildings are all staffed 24/7 but with fewer staff at that dinner hour, your help allows staff to deal with client needs, the front doors and phones, while you help and chat with those we serve. Sign-up is by an online calendar or app, and you do not need to be available every week on the same day, We do suggest you aim to serve at least twice each month so you are familiar with the task and can work independently. We are a Housing First and harm-reduction based, secular agency. You will be required to compete the short application form, and provide us with 2 references who can attest to your ability to be non-judgmental and confidential. After a phone call and a general systems and safety orientation to the organization, you will able to choose your shifts online. Training for the task will be given by our staff at your first shift. Adults may accompany teens to do this task and small groups of 2-3 friends or a family can do this task. The kitchens are not large enough to accommodate a large team. | Volunteer: Digital Navigator AssistantAlbany Public Library is looking for interested individuals who can help bring technological guidance to our patrons. The Library values access to technology; many patrons use computers, borrow hotspots, or connect to our Wi-Fi via their personal devices. Sometimes technology can be complicated or confusing for people to navigate, and they need extra guidance or support. The Library is looking for individuals interested in volunteering for 2 months (about 35-50 hours) or for 4 months (about 60-150 hours). Volunteering as a Digital Navigator Assistant is a great way to help people by answering questions about computers, mobile devices, e-mail accounts, websites or word documents, resume formatting or cover letter printing, and many other things. A successful volunteer will be someone who is patient and comfortable working with technological confusion. APL is asking for volunteers to help guide library patrons towards being informed digital citizens. While the Library can connect users to the infinity of the Internet, we need community members to help connect users with authentic and relevant information about technology and the Internet. Often, college students volunteer as Digital Navigator Assistants to earn experiential learning credit or community service hours. The Albany Public Library is happy to work with universities to provide this opportunity to students. APL offers short term and long term volunteer positions depending on the amount of credit hours required for one's associated college course. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a Digital Navigator Assistant at the Albany Public Library, please respond to this position and a Library staff member will contact you. | Volunteer: Onward Ops ProgramThe Veterans & Community Housing Coalition has been selected by the NYS Office of Mental Health’s Suicide Prevention Center (SPCNY) to participate in a powerful initiative: the Onward Ops program, funded through the CARES UP Grant. This is a major milestone in our mission to support Veterans, and we want you to be a part of it! So, what is Onward Ops? Imagine a "Big Brothers/Big Sisters" program for Veterans. That’s what Onward Ops is all about. In partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Department of Defense, the program connects recently separated Veterans and Transitioning Service Members (TSM/Vs) with local volunteer sponsors who offer mentorship, guidance, and support through the first 12 months of civilian life, a critical period often called the “Deadly Gap” due to heightened risks of suicide, homelessness, unemployment, and more. Why does this matter? Veterans leaving the military often face an overwhelming adjustment. With the Onward Ops program, we can change that. Together, we can give these heroes the local support and human connection they need to not just survive but thrive. We’re calling on our trusted partners and friends to join us as local sponsors. As a sponsor, you’ll:Help a Veteran develop a transition plan Provide real-world advice and support Connect them to local resources like jobs, healthcare, and schools Make a real difference in their first year out of service Keep in mind, sponsors are not clinicians, they’re compassionate community members offering guidance, not medical advice. You can set your own schedule, and there are two easy ways to get certified:Join a 3-hour, interactive national training session Complete a self-paced module and a virtual orientation Both options earn you a Sponsor Certificate, so you can be ready when Veterans in our region need you. Agency: Veterans and Community Housing Coalition The Veterans & Community Housing Coalition has been selected by the NYS Office of Mental Health’s Suicide Prevention Center (SPCNY) to participate in a powerful initiative: the Onward Ops program, funded through the CARES UP Grant. | Volunteer: Program Supply Closet OrganizerPrograms and activities are a huge part of the Albany Public Library and our service to the community. It takes a lot of tools, materials, and planning for the librarians to share a variety of programs focused on science, art, history, literature, personal development, entertainment, and so much more. Each neighborhood library branch does its best to provide engaging and meaningful experiences to its patrons. All of the tools and resources that librarians use to share programs are stored in supply closets at the libraries. These storage areas can become quite full of wacky toys, multi-use craft materials, art supplies, science experiments, and who knows what else. The Albany Public Library is looking for an interested volunteer to help us organize these closets and generate a list of the stocked items. The volunteer(s) would work alongside the Volunteer Coordinator to develop an inventory and organize the items. A successful volunteer will be someone who enjoys organizing, recording items in a spreadsheet, and working with others. If you or someone you know is interested in helping out, respond to this volunteer opportunity and a library staff member will be in contact with you about the next steps.
