Volunteer: South End Earth Day 2026Each spring, volunteers come together to care for the community gardens in the South End and prepare them for the growing season. Over the last 15 years it’s developed into so much more, with free food and drinks, local entertainment, and an array of community resources. We’d love for you to join us. Volunteers will meet at Radix at 10 a.m., form groups for each garden site, and team up with a Crew leader. We’ll provide all the tools and supplies needed to freshen up garden beds and remove debris that has accumulated over the winter. At 1 p.m. the Block Party starts, with food and refreshments, music and dancing going until 4 p.m. Countless community-based organizations will be there, eager to share what they have to offer including free health screenings, clean energy job resources, soil testing, and more. If you are interested in volunteering, setting up a table, having an activity, or sponsoring this event please RSVP here or reach out to haley@radixcenter.org for more information. We hope to see you there! This event is hosted by Radix Ecological Sustainability Center and AVillage, Inc, with the support of: the Albany Community Land Trust, Capital Region Clean Energy Hub, City of Albany Love Your Block & Office of Sustainability, The Collaboratory at ACPHS, Giffen Elementary School, Historic Cherry Hill, Hudson Valley Community College's Educational Opportunity Center, Red Bookshelf, SEAT Center, and Trinity Alliance of the Capital Region. Volunteer: Patient Navigator VolunteerWant to help newly arrived refugees navigate the healthcare system?
Patient Navigator Volunteer’s (PNV's) perform a vital role at USCRI-Albany by transporting refugee families to important medical and other appointments. In general, most PNV's sign-up for one or two trips per week, or every other week. All PNV trips are done weekdays during business hours, with many involving taking refugees to Refugee Health Assessment (RHA) appointments. The RHA process is a very comprehensive medical screening conducted within the first 90 days of a refugee's arrival. It is done at either St. Peter's or Whitney Young, and involves three separate appointments. Other PNV trips involve taking clients who have on-going medical issues to their appointments. These are generally scheduled through Medical Coordination Program coordinator or our "Services to Older Refugees Program". Finally, our clients also have miscellaneous appointments that require transportation: These can involve taking newly-arrived refugees to the Social Security Administration office in Albany, taking parents & their children to WIC program appointments at Whitney Young, etc. We look forward to you joining our volunteer team! Volunteer: We Choose Albany Public Schools Mentorship ProgramGoal Of The Program: The goal of the program is to pair up 75 high school aged students from the Albany school district with local college students for a mentor/mentee relationship. The high school students participating in this program are often labeled “troubled”, however it is our goal that through the mentorship program, these middle school youth will be able see their full potential and achieve at their fullest capacity through the guidance of a current college student. It is our hope that they gain insight on steps they need to take to graduate from middle school and high school and build the confidence to know that college may be an option following High School. To participate in the mentorship program, please fill out the attached Student Volunteer Application form and submit it to Reverend Maurice Drowns (518)424-8787 or by email at Mauricedrown267@gmail.com Once you have submitted the form, you will be contacted and given your mentee assignment. Volunteer: Program Support VolunteersPROGRAM SUPPORT VOLUNTEER
USCRI Albany seeks passionate, organized, dedicated individuals to serve as student volunteers in our office year-round. Diverse positions are available assisting with refugee services, immigration legal services, accounting, and development/management functions. Volunteers must commit to a minimum of 12 weeks, 12-20 hours a week during the academic year, 25-40 hours a week in the summer.
Volunteering with USCRI Albany is rewarding and challenging. USCRI Albany volunteers work hard and contribute to our agency in significant ways, and build skills that they take with them to support success in a variety of career paths. Successful past volunteers have worked with USCRI during their undergraduate and graduate study. USCRI Albany volunteers have gone on to graduate and post-graduate programs; service in the Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, and similar programs; and professional work in the nonprofit, government, and business sectors.
Volunteers have access to a range of benefits during their time at USCRI Albany, including on-the-job learning opportunities and professional development resources. USCRI Albany volunteers can expect to do the following:
• Develop a rich understanding of refugees and refugee resettlement.
• Experience immersion in the daily operations in the field office of a national non-profit organization with a century of experience serving immigrants and refugees across the United States and internationally.
• Work with staff, clients, and peers from around the world.
•
ABOUT OUR VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
• All volunteer positions are unpaid. Applicants are responsible for all costs of living.
• Student volunteers must commit to a minimum of 12 weeks, 12-20 hours a week during the academic year, 25-40 hours a week in the summer. Preference is given to applicants who can make a commitment beyond the minimum.
• Volunteers must complete hours within the business week, Mon-Fri 9:00-5:00.
Each volunteer position at USCRI Albany is a unique experience and has a balance of tasks. At the same time, there are common experiences that volunteers can expect.
• Direct Client Interaction. Refugee clients are in our office every day, and all volunteers will have the opportunity to practice cross-cultural communication skills through client interaction. Most volunteers will have a weekly shift at our Front Desk, welcoming and assisting clients.
While it is wonderful that many of our volunteer applicants want experience working with refugee populations, it is important to note that volunteer positions with USCRI Albany are not an opportunity to get to know refugees on a personal level. Volunteers assist with the delivery of services to refugees as clients of USCRI, maintaining professional boundaries at all times.
• Administrative Work. All volunteers and all staff collaborate in the necessary tasks of documenting the services we provide to clients. No position is solely administrative, but all volunteers contribute to tasks including filing, copying, faxing, and data entry. USCRI Albany seeks volunteers who understand the importance of accurate records and are willing to give their full attention to necessary administrative tasks.
• Housing Support. A major task of refugee resettlement organizations is preparing apartments for new arrivals, including moving in furniture, kitchen and bathroom items, and an initial supply of food staples. Some positions focus more on housing support; during busy weeks, all volunteers with the physical ability to do so are asked to assist with housing preparation.
• Representing USCRI to the broader community. All volunteers will interact with the broader community, including other volunteers, landlords, employers, and partner agencies. Everyone is expected to clearly communicate the mission and services of USCRI Albany and to address community members’ questions with patience and respect.
• Managing time and meeting deadlines. All volunteers are expected to come prepared to keep track of and meet multiple deadlines, from urgent tasks to multi-week projects.

Volunteer: Tutor/MentorWhat is Wizard's Wardrobe?
The Wizard’s Wardrobe is a free one-on-one, after-school tutoring program for elementary students in the South End of Albany. Our focus is on reading and writing skills, along with problem solving, which is nurtured with our monthly STEM challenges. These challenges help build perseverance and grit and encourage risk-taking. Our trained volunteer tutors welcome the children into a safe space, with an imaginative theme. Our library has over 2,700 books in order for tutors to help students find ones of interest on their reading level, as well as books that tutors can read to them to increase their listening vocabularies. Once accepted into the program, students are welcome to continue through elementary school. We work to complement and enhance their experiences in school to raise their academic standings. Project Description:This is an excellent opportunity for someone who loves children, has a can-do attitude and is ready to strengthen a young student’s possibilities. As one tutor said of her student, “my job is to help her believe in herself and what she can accomplish.” Tutors must complete a two-day training before being assigned a student. Our last training for the 2024-25 school year will be Jan. 11 & 18, 2025. We ask tutors to make a commitment for a full school year. Building a relationship with the student is of primary importance. It is this relationship that research tells us allows the student to make great progress. Many of our tutors have worked with their students for several years. Currently we have a waiting list of students. We need tutors in order to enroll students. Your volunteering with us is essential. Students come twice a week for one and a half hours each time. Tutors commit to one or two afternoons a week. If twice, the student will have only that one tutor. If once, the tutor will share the student with another tutor. Tutors participate in a 15-hour training course. Our children come at various times, depending on which school they attend. The program is open from 1:00 - 5:30 PM, Monday-Thursday with 2 tutoring slots (2:45-4:15; 3:45-5:15). It is also open on Friday, 2:00-5:30. We are practicing social distancing and have arranged our sit-down living room/dining room to allow for this.Agency: Albany Damien Center Need Type: Volunteer Date: Is Ongoing Zip Code: 12208 Allow Groups: No |
