Inaugural Capital Region Juneteenth Conference and Sigma Sleep-out for Social Justice
“Building Capacity for African Freedom in the Americas and Beyond”
June 17th – 19th, 2021
University at Albany, Albany NY
Juneteenth is the oldest commemorated celebration of the abolishment of slavery in the United States. On June 19th, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger and his Union soldiers landed in Texas with news that the war had ended and that enslaved persons were free - two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. For some, this marked the true end of slavery in the United States.
Theme: “Building Capacity for African Freedom in the Americas and Beyond”
Sleepout for Social Justice:
The conference will conclude with a Sleepout for Social Justice on the University Campus to raise funds to support the Melodies Center’s work on Sickle Cell Research, Advocacy and Support and the H. Danston Davis Swimming Scholarships Fund.
