The Special Olympics Unified Sports program creates opportunities for athletes with and without intellectual disabilities to play on the same team, fostering inclusion, teamwork, and mutual respect. However, the success of these events depends not only on participation but also on the presence of a supportive and engaged community. Many athletes with intellectual disabilities experience social isolation and are often overlooked in traditional campus spaces, making visible encouragement and recognition especially meaningful.
Volunteers will be creating posters and signs to cheer on student athletes, helping to build an environment where all participants feel valued, celebrated, and supported. Without these visible expressions of support, the atmosphere of inclusion and celebration that defines Unified Sports is harder to achieve.
